Background

Nu Noize is a DJ duo brand/project that needed a distinct visual identity to match its sound, audience, and positioning within the electronic/music culture space. The objective was to build a distinctive, scalable brand system that could exist across digital platforms, music releases, and live experiences while standing out in a saturated visual landscape.

The duo consists of Knowpa Slaps and DJ Mackswell.

Their visual inspiration consisted of themes such as: Weathered, Gritty, Punk x Indie, & American Apparel.

Their type inspiration consisted of fonts such as: Helvetica and Boxy.

Research & Insights

An audit of contemporary electronic artists, labels, and festival branding revealed a reliance on high-contrast typography, kinetic visuals, and modular design systems. While many brands leaned into similar aesthetics, there was an opportunity to differentiate through a more refined balance of structure and experimentation. Audience behavior also indicated a strong preference for visually striking, loopable, and motion-ready assets optimized for social platforms.

Upper Echelon, sister company to Warner Media, contracted me to create an advertisement for Masego's upcoming merch drop.

I was provided designs and the product images as well as themes that were to fit Masego's branding. I was also given the brief of the project beings:

Deliverables:

1:1, 9:16, & 16:9 formats

20 Seconds Vide

Theme:

Laid-back & Refined

Displays for the Products

A Jazz Marquee if Possible

Early 2000's neo-soul

I created the 3D mockups of the merch in Blender 3D and composited the whole scene in After Effects.

The advertisement was a success with the post getting over 12k likes and 100+ comments. Masego & the creative studio were happy with the project.

Creative Direction

The creative direction centered on controlled chaos—pairing bold, structured typography with layered, expressive elements to reflect the unpredictability and energy of the music. The goal was to create a system that felt alive and reactive, while maintaining consistency and recognizability across all outputs.

Execution

The identity was built as a flexible system rather than a static mark. This included the development of a primary logo, typographic hierarchy, color system, and a library of graphic treatments. Each component was designed to function independently or together, enabling rapid content creation across formats such as cover art, social content, and motion graphics.

The final design language combines sharp, modern typography with high-contrast color applications and layered visual textures. Elements were intentionally designed for motion, allowing the brand to translate seamlessly into animated assets and live visuals. The system balances clarity with edge—ensuring legibility while preserving a distinct, high-energy aesthetic.
